Let’s Make It A Date In Oakland, CA | Caroline & Luke
This one was personal. Everything we did was a direct reflection of who they are as people and as residents of Oakland. They already knew where they wanted to go and what they wanted to do. My part was simple because I documented their experience with some guidance. I loved that.
We started the morning at Bakesum, their favorite bakery right down the street from where they live. Caroline got a matcha and so did Luke, and they shared a sweet pastry between them. They shared a moment in the outdoor seating, against the bakery window, just the two of them hanging out like any other morning. It set the tone for the experience. From there we walked over to Brother and Sisters Flower Shop for a quick stop.The green walls on the outside of that building alone were such a vibe. Inside they have an aesthetic greenhouse, it feels like a hidden gem.
Halfway through the session Caroline and Luke did an outfit change and then we headed up the street to Grand Lake Theatre, a spot they both love. They wouldn't let us in with cameras so we kept it to portraits out front. Next time I will hide my camera in a bag. My favorite photo from the entire session is this wide frame of the two of them standing underneath the theatre sign with the whole busy intersection.
Our last location was at Clio's Books, the couple's favorite bar, just a quick five minute drive from the theatre. I had never been and honestly had no idea what I was walking into. When I got there Caroline and Luke had already grabbed seats, set up a chess board, and ordered drinks. They were so relaxed and enjoying themselves. After they finished their drinks we explored the books and the layout of the space and called it a day there.
This one felt less like a photoshoot and more like tagging along with two people who are just really good at being themselves together.
